Yakushima’s Specialty: Flying fish | 屋久島名物「トビウオ」

One of the characteristics dishes in Yakushima is flying fish, which can be served in many ways, such as sashimi and tempura.
屋久島の郷土料理のひとつに「トビウオ料理」があり、刺身や天ぷらなど、さまざまな調理法で食べることができます。

Even though in Japan they are called “Tobio – トビウオ”, in Kagoshima’s local dialect they are also called “Toppy – トッピー”. The high-speed boat that connects Yakushima with Kagoshima seems to be called Toppy after the flying fish!
日本では「トビウオ」と呼ばれますが、鹿児島の方言では「トッピー」とも呼ばれるそうです。屋久島と鹿児島を結ぶ高速船は、「トビウオ」にちなんで「トッピー」と名付けられました。

If you are lucky, you might see some flying fishes flying by when taking the boat to the island!
運が良ければ、船で島へ向かう際にトビウオが飛んでいるのを見ることができるかもしれません。^^
