Japanese plum | スモモ
Another fruit you can find at Yakushima Senvus Village is the Japanese plum (or sumomo in Japanese).
「屋久島センバスビレッジ」には、「スモモ」という果物もあります。
The Japanese plum is said to have originated in China during the Nara period, and receives its Japanese name because of its sourness compared to peach. (“Su” comes from suppai・酸っぱい that means sour, and “momo” is peach in Japanese).
「スモモ」は中国が原産で、奈良時代に日本に伝わったとされ、桃に比べて酸味が強いことから、この名前がついています。
I had the chance to try one the other day, and it was really good and sour!
